I got home not too long ago from playing a spontanious set at a bar called
Lost in
Lan Kwai Fong, Central district, Hong Kong. It's about 5:30am right now.
It all started like so...
Jay and I had decided to take the MTR subway to Central station where we knew how to take the night bus home (the MTR and KCR didn't run much later than midnight). When we got out of the station we noticed that the streets of Lan Kwai were packed with people, so we decided to take a stroll to check it out. We were definately not planning on staying for very long, it was just supposed to be a quick jaunt around the area to see which places were happening on a Saturday night in the HK.
When I walked by Lost, I noticed an all too familiar broken beat sound, so I decided to drop in and perhaps even drop a cd off. When I introduced myself to the barstaff as a breaks DJ from Canada they introduced me to the resident dj, Thierry.
Now Thierry was absolutely fantastic. He offered to lend me his headphones and records to play for a bit. Not sure if this was supposed to be a screening or if it was just all in good fun, but I definately couldn't pass up the chance to play in Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong.
I was supposed to go on after Thierry played a few more records so I immediately made my way to the bar to get a few drinks in me to loosen me up and take away from the significant nervousness I felt. It definately helped.
I had a hoot of a time playing tonight! The sound system in that place was just pounding! The staff, djs, crowd were all absolutely great! My mixes were clean and right on track even though they weren't my records! This was definately the best night I've had in Hong Kong! This evening definately fluked out in my favor.
The only downfall is that I'm leaving in two days. I'm glad I was at least able to make my mark before I left though.
I was a little disappointed in myself for not doing the same in Thailand. I didn't even think to bring demos when I went over there.
Oh well, I guess I'll have to plan another 'networking' trip sometime soon! Haha...
